CALLING FOR APPLICATIONS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 5th HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION – 2019

The Organizing Committee of the Hong Kong International Piano Competition (from now on referred to as The Committee), welcomes applications from pianists from all over the world whose dates of birth are on or later than the 7th October 1989.

Students of members of the Jury ARE allowed to participate. Should this be the case, the score awarded by the Jury to a candidate whose teacher is a member of the Jury will exclude the voting of his/her teacher. The score each participant will receive will then be divided by the number of votes contributing to achieve his/her score for each stage.

In order to achieve this fair treatment of all candidates, applicants must list all teachers they have studied or are studying with, specifying the form of studies undertaken with each of them, duration of studies, etc. Failing to do so might result in disqualification of candidates at any stage of the competition.

- Deadline for applications: 28th Feb. 2019

- Max. 35 accepted candidates announced on: 15th Mar. 2019

The list of Members of the Jury of the Hong Kong International Piano Competition – 2019 will be published at a later stage.

In our efforts to make the Competition an event which will be emphasizing its music making aspect rather than its competitive edge which, by definition cannot be avoided, we are introducing a number of changes which have been incorporated in the general outline of the Competition/Festival as follows:

1) The selection of contestants will be done, as it has been done before, by the local members of the Jury selecting 35 of the applicants to participate in Round I of the Competition (Quarter Finals).
Along with their application form, all applicants will be sending a DVD recording of their performance of a programme selected from a given “menu” (see Annex 1).
First Prize-winners of International Piano Competitions, members of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, will be automatically accepted to participate without having to go through this Selection process, provided they comply with other conditions of application to participate in the competition. However, given the new format the Competition is adopting, they will be requested to participate in Round I (Quarter Finals) of the Competition.

2) Instead of flying the 35 quarter finalists to Hong Kong to go through Round I (Quarter Finals), the participants will be requested to record their up to 70 minutes performance of a programme which each one of them will have selected from a given list, (see Annex 2) and send it to our office according to the schedule which we detail later on in this briefing. Given that some Contestants live far away from Hong Kong and, therefore, having to pay for their airfares may prove to be a deterrent for them to participate, (given that only the 15 participants who go on to Round II (Semi-finals) will get their airfares refunded), this new format of the competition will ensure that the selected 15 semi-finalists will be buying their air tickets to come to Hong Kong with the certainty that their airfares will be refunded on arrival to Hong Kong, (provided the purchase of the tickets follows the guidelines appearing on the Guide for Applicants which will be published at the same time with this briefing).

  - 1st ROUND (Quarter Finals) video recordings to be received by the 15th June 2019

3) Our IT engineer will then upload all the recordings onto a “cloud” and a password will be given to each of the 11 members of the Jury for them to listen to all of them at their own pace.

4) Members of the Jury will be given a date by which each one of them has to return to us a list of his/her choice of 15 contestants to go on to Round II (semi-finals).

5) The Chairman and the Executive Secretary of the Society, administrative, non-voting members of the Panel of the Jury, will be in charge of processing the results of the voting of the members of the Jury (as it has been always done in the previous Competitions).
Nobody else, apart from the Chairman and the Executive Secretary of the Society, will know the voting results received from each individual member of the Jury.

  - 15 Semi-Finalists announced: 15th July 2019

6) Once the results are made public, the 15 semi-finalists will be invited to come to Hong Kong under a contract to perform. As all performers are invited by different organizations to come to perform in Hong Kong, the terms of the Contract are going to be:

* The 15 semi-finalists will be refunded the cost of their return economy class tickets to fly to
Hong Kong from their place of abode. (Guidelines can be found in the “Guide for Applicants”)
* The 15 semi-finalists will be provided with hotel accommodation with a buffet breakfast included while in Hong Kong participating in the competition and
* They will be given a per diem allowance as well as being provided with practicing facilities and intra city transportation as needed between the hotel, practicing venue and HK City Hall.

7) The 15 semi-finalists will literary come to Hong Kong to perform a full recital each (part I – intermission – part II), of a total maximum duration of 100 minutes, to include an intermission of 15 minutes. The recital will be of a completely free repertoire from published, commercially available scores (except for one maximum 10 minutes long compulsory piece which our Society will have commissioned) which will be performed in front of an audience composed of the general public and which will include the Jury.
The Contestants will be making use of all the special qualities that performing artists are
endowed with and which they will be making use of for the rest of their professional lives!

8) Members of the Jury and the 15 semi-finalists will then be arriving in HK for the second Round (Semi finals) which will take place at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, starting on Monday 7th October, with only two recitals being played each day, at 17:30 and at 20:00 respectively. Members of the Jury will be arriving Hong Kong on Saturday 5th October 2019.

9) Once the 15 semi-finalists have been selected, there will be a draw to determine the days when each one will be giving a recital and the order of performances so attained will determine the days on which they will be expected to arrive in Hong Kong as follows:

Sat. 5th Oct. 2019 CONTESTANTS 1 AND 2 ARRIVE IN HONG KONG

This last performance of the Semi Finals, on Monday 14th Oct. 2019, will be followed by Jury deliberation and announcement of 6 FINALISTS who will be taking part in the Final Round of the Competition (consisting of two parts: chamber music and a concerto).
This announcement will be then immediately posted in the notice board of the competition at the Hong Kong City Hall and in our official website: www.chopinsocietyhk.org

With this re-structuring of the way we are conceiving the Competition, we expect to eliminate the wall-to-wall music exercise for the Jury, which has been preoccupying us since the inception of our competition, format which we feel is counter-productive to be imposed onto any artistic presentation, never mind when it is one that involves “comparing” different performances. We aim at presenting 15 top class recitals in Hong Kong, from which the Jury will select the 6 finalists who will then go on to the Finals, which will consist of two parts: Chamber Music and Concertos.

10) As mentioned above, the 15 artists will be coming to perform in Hong Kong under a contract ...
To continue with the terms of the contract:

* The 9 artists who will not advance on to the Finals, will receive a “performing fee” of USD 500 each.
* These 9 artists who will have not been selected to participate in the Final Round will be given free accommodation until Wed. 16th October when they will be departing Hong Kong.
Should they wish to stay on in Hong Kong and attend the final round and the gala performances part of the Joy of Music Festival 2019, they will be welcome to do so, although the Society will not be paying for their expenses beyond the Wed. 16th October.

11) Tuesday 15th October - DAY FREE OF COMPETITION PERFORMANCES -
1st Performance part of THE JOY OF MUSIC FESTIVAL 2019, at 19:00, at the City Hall Concert Hall (Programme to be announced).

Most members of the Jury will deliver master classes and/or special presentations. We will be announcing the Master Classes and Special Presentations as we are having them confirmed.

12) The Society's own LOGOS Ensemble will be in charge of performing with each one of the 6 Finalists during the Chamber Music section of the Finals. Another very special aspect of our Competition 2019, will be to incorporate a unique offer received from the LOGOS Ensemble by which the Finalists will be able to have a free choice of repertoire from the extensive list of published, commercially available scores of Piano Trios, Quartets or Quintets to be performed during their Chamber Music section of the Finals. In addition to this, we are in the process of confirming a compulsory 5 to 6 minutes long commissioned piece for piano and guitar which will be played by each contestant accompanied by renowned guitarist Alvaro Pierri.
