Alvaro Pierri

Alvaro Pierri was born in Montevideo, Uruguay to a musical family and was taught from an early age music and guitar.  He completed his studies at the Uruguayan National Institute of Musicology and under Abel Carlevaro and Guido Santorsola.  He participated in international guitar competitions where he won numerous first prizes including the gold medal and first prize at the 18th Paris International Guitar Competition, Radio France.

Alvaro Pierri now teaches at the University of Quebec in Montreal, at McGill University and at Mozarteum in Salzburg, as well as conducting masterclasses and participating in festivals across the world.

Professor Pierri pursues a very active career as a soloist and with orchestras and chamber groups playing troughout Europe, Japan and North and South America.  He has given world premiers of works by composers such as Brouwer, Santorsola, Carlevaro, Rougier, Gonzales and others, many of these specially composed for him.  As a chamber musician he has performed with numerous artists such as Astor Piazzolla, felow Uruguayan guitarist Eduardo Fernandez and Leo Brouwer.

His discrography includes 12 CDs and his recordings have been nominated five times for the coveted FELIX award for the best classical CD of the year, a prize which he has won twice.

The Collective Workshops (eight hours all together) are free of charge for those participants attending the four of them (eight hours), given that there is going to be a continuity in the topics developed. All those wanting to attend will have to deposit the sum of HK$500 in the Chopin Society of HK account (details to follow). On completion of the four workshops, provided each participant has attended THE FOUR of them (two hours each), the HK$500 will be returned back to each participant against presentation of the deposit receipt. Should the participant miss one or more hours of workshop, the HK$500 will be kept by the Society, considered as payment for participation in whatever part of the workshop/masterclass they will have attended.

Maestro Pierri has sent the following description of the workshops he is going to conduct:

THEME

Learning and developing repertoires, techniques and excercises, by working on the following stages:

Acquiring, implementing, assimilating, developing and applying

Musical and Instrumental Learning: Optimal relationships, excercises and possible repertoires

FORMAT

Announcement of the "Day subjects", distribution of reading material, music and exercises. The participants would preferably have their instruments all the time, they should be able to take notes. Written working material will be distributed: five to ten pages per day.
