Giuseppe ANDALORO

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistGiuseppe Andaloro is considered by international critics to be one of the finest pianists of his generation and he has been guest of renowned festivals (Salzburger Festspiele, Ruhr Klavier, Spoleto Due Mondi, Bucarest Enescu, Ravello, Duszniki-Zdròj, Festival Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli di Brescia e Bergamo) in the most important concert halls and theaters in the world. He regularly plays with major orchestras (London Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonische Camerata Berlin, London Mozart Players) great conductors (such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gianandrea Noseda, Andrew Parrott) and internationally acclaimed artists (including Sarah Chang, Giovanni Sollima, Sergj Krylov, John Malkovich).

He has won First Prize in some of the major international competitions (International Competition of London, Porto, Sendai, Hong Kong, “Ferruccio Busoni” in Bolzano) and in 2005 he was praised for artistic merit also by the Italian Ministry for Heritage and Cultural Activities.

Andaloro gives master classes in Italy and abroad (Tokyo Showa University, Fresno California State University, Hong Kong Chopin Society, International Keyboard Academy of Thailand, Kuala Lumpur Chopin Society) and is a member of the jury for prestigious international competitions.

He has many records on his credit: his last Sony Album “Cruel Beauty” (November 2013) is a world premiére of Italian Late Renaissance and Early Baroque music, for the very first time recorded on a modern piano.

On 14th September 2014 he made his debut at the prestigious “Teatro Alla Scala” in Milan.

His repertoire ranges from Italian Renaissance to modern and contemporary music.

 


 

Federico COLLI


Joy of Music 2015 ArtistFederico Colli was born in Brescia - Italy on August 10th, 1988.

He studied at the Milan Conservatory, at the Imola International Piano Academy and at the Salzburg Mozarteum under the guidance of S. Marengoni, K. Bogino, B. Petrushansky and P. Gililov, also taking part in Masterclasses with M. Rybicki, E. Virsaladze, J. O’Conor, F. Scala, A. Lonquich and J. Soriano.

After the First Prize at the Salzburg Mozart Competition 2011 (playing with the Camerata Salzburg conducted by D. Russell Davies) and the winning with Gold Medal "Daw Aung Sun Suu Kyi" at The Leeds International Piano Competition 2012 (playing with the Hallé Manchester Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir M. Elder), he embarked on a series of prestigious concerts all over the world, achieving a great success of audience and critics.

His interpretation of Rachmaninov's Third Concerto with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra under Y. Temirkanov was particularly appreciated in Milan, Teatro degli Arcimboldi, and in Turin, Auditorium Lingotto, for the MiTo International Festival 2013.

Highly acclaimed have been his performances held in a German concert tour with the Klassische Philharmonie Bonn under H. Beissel (Konzerthaus in Berlin, Beethovensalle in Stuttgart and Bonn, Herkulessaal in Munich and Laeiszhalle in Hamburg), at the Musikverein in Vienna, at the Nikkei Hall and Musashino Cultural Hall in Tokyo, at the ITAIM Theatre in Sao Paulo do Brasil, at the Sala Nezahualcoyotl in Mexico City with the Orquesta Filarmonica de la UNAM under P. C. Orizio, at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford with the Oxford’s Symphony Orchestra under M. Papadopoulos, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg with the Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra under D. Botinis. For the Chopin and his Europe International Music Festival, he also played at the Philharmonic Concert Hall in Warsaw with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by J. Kaspszyk, in a thrilling programme which also featured Martha Argerich and Nelson Freire.

More recently, he has performed at the Konzerthaus in Vienna with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra conducted by J. Hattori, at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under V. Petrenko, at the Salle Cortot in Paris and at the Teatro Manzoni in Bologna. In place of Boris Berezovsky, he has played at the Teatro Grande in Brescia and at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo with the Brescia Bergamo Festival Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by P. C. Orizio.

Coinciding with his debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London for the International Piano Series 2014, a solo CD produced by Champs Hill Records - England has been submitted, featuring works by Beethoven, Scriabin and Mussorgsky.

In the 2014-2015 Season he played in Kiev with the National Philharmonic of Ukraine under R. Kofman, in London for the Young Pianists Series of the London Symphony Orchestra and at the Barbican Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under S. Oramo, in Rome for I Concerti del Quirinale, in Milan for La Società dei Concerti, in Leeds with the Orchestra of Opera North under K. Bakels, in Florence with the Orchestra della Toscana under S. Kochanovsky, in Turin with the RAI National Symphony Orchestra under F. M. Bressan and at the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw with the South Netherlands Philharmonic under E. Spanjaard.

 


 

Pierre DOUMENGE

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistPassionately fond of chamber music. Pierre Doumenge was a member of the Dante Quarter and regularly explores the repertoire with artists such as Pascal Rog?, Lars Vogt, Daniel Hope, Pekka Kuusisto, Lawrence Power, Belcea, Allegri, Sacconi, London Haydn quartets and the Nash Ensemble. He has appeared at many international festivals (Aldeburgh, Kuhmo, Bucharest, La Hague, Nuremberg, Bergstaden, Hindsgalv, IMS, Prussia Cove, Stellenbosch, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Boston) and recorded for the Dutton, Meridian and Hyperion labels to great critical acclaim. In 2008 he was chosen to be the official cellist of the Menuhin International Violin Competition, performing the Ravel Duo Sonata with the nine semi-finalists.

Pierre works regularly as guest principal cellist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra, I’Orchestre du Monde, London Sinfonietta, Academy of St Martin in the Field, Bournemouth Symphony, BBC Welsh and English National Opera.

Pierre taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School from 2003-2009 and is a cello professor at the Guildhall School of Music, London. He gives annual masterclasses at the Oxford Cello School, International Cello Courses UK, Violoncello Society of London, Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, West Helsinki Music Institute, Conservatoire Royal de Mons and the Szymon Goldberg Seminars in Toyama, Japan.

 


 

Eric Fung - clarinet

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistEric Fung began clarinet lessons with John Schertle at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He then continued his education at Mannes College The New School for Music and The Yale School of Music under the tutelage of Charles Neidich, Ayako Oshima and David Shifrin. During his studies he worked with Anthony Mcgill, Stephen Williamson, David Krakauer and Richard Stolzman. Eric Fung has participated in various music festivals around the world including the Tongyeong International Music Festival, the Pablo Casals Festival of Prades, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. He also performed as a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra. In New York City he performed at Carnegie Hall, the Alice Tully Hall and the Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center. In 2013 he founded Ensemble M, a chamber music ensemble for string quartet with double bass and clarinet.

 


 

Andrew HAVERON

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistAndrew Haveron has established himself as one of the most sought after violinists of his generation. The highest British prize-winner at the prestigious ‘Paganini’ competition for the last fifty years, Andrew studied in London at the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music. With unrivalled versatility Andrew is a highly respected soloist, chamber musician and concertmaster.

As a soloist Andrew has performed concertos with conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Sir Roger Norrington, Jiří Bělohlávek, Skrowachewski, David Roberston and John Wilson, performing a broad range of well known and less familiar repetoire with many of the UK’s finest orchestras.

In 1999 Andrew was appointed first violinist of the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet. A busy schedule saw the quartet perform and broadcast in their unique style all over the world collaborating with outstanding artists and commissioning many new works from today’s composers. Also famed for their iconic ‘cross-genre’ projects the quartet enjoyed barrier-breaking work with Elvis Costello, Björk, Paul McCartney and Sting. Andrew recorded more than fifteen albums with the quartet, many of which received industry awards such as “Diapason d’or” and “Choc du Monde”. Andrew has also appeared with numerous other groups such as the Nash and Hebrides ensembles, the Logos Chamber Group, Kathy Selby and the Omega Ensemble.

Andrew is also in great demand as a concertmaster and director and has worked with all the major symphony orchestras in the UK and many further afield. In July 2007 he became concertmaster of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, broadcasting frequently on BBC Radio and enjoying many appearances at the BBC Proms including the famous “Last Night”. Joining the Philharmonia Orchestra in 2012 Andrew also led the ‘World Orchestra for Peace’ at the request of its conductor Valery Gergiev. He has also been the leader of ‘The John Wilson Orchestra’ since its inception. Most recently, Andrew has taken up his new role as concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Alongside his work in Australia this season Andrew will also be appearing with orchestras in Singapore, Hong Kong and London and will also be touring with The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.

In 2004 Andrew received an honorary Doctorate from the University of Kent for his services to music. He plays on a violin made for him in 2000 by the American luthier Sam Zygmuntowicz.

 


 

Joel HUNTER

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistSince graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1997, Joel has been performing all over the world with many leading ensembles and orchestras.

Immediately after his studies he was appointed co-principal viola with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow and from 2006 - 2013 held the post of principal viola in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under it's music director, Daniel Harding.

He has appeared as the principal violist in most UK orchestras including the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and internationally with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Oslo and Munich Philharmonic Orchestras as well as the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Since 2012 Joel has been a member of the internationally acclaimed John Wilson Orchestra performing exclusively works from the golden age of Hollywood and Great American Songbook.

He is currently the principal violist of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra working extensively throughout Europe, and in the UK with the London Chamber Orchestra with whom he also performed as a soloist in 2010 at St.Johns Smith Square, London.

Alongside these many commitments he also finds time to work in the studio orchestras of London, recording scores for film and television.

As a chamber musician Joel has performed with many eminent artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Augustin Dumay, Piers Lane, Christian Tetzlaff, Alisa Weilerstein, Pascal Roge and Leif Ove Andsnes in concerts throughout the world. He has performed at international festivals like the Mecklenburg Vorpommern Festival with the Kungsbacker String Trio and in the U.S.A at the Charlottesville International Chamber Music Festival and regularly appears with Ensemble 360 in the UK. He is also a member of the Logos Chamber Group led by Andrew Haveron and resident in Hong Kong for the International Piano Competition and Joy Of Music Festival.

Passionate about teaching, Joel has coached and taught at many institutions throughout Europe and especially enjoys working with youth orchestras. He has coached the violas of the World Youth Orchestra and in 2013 was appointed visiting professor at the Gustav Mahler Summer Academy in Bolzano, Italy.

In 2001 he was made an ʻAssociateʼ of the Royal Academy of Music in London (ARAM) for his services to the profession.

 


 

Henry Lai

Education background: Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies ( HKU ), Bachelor in Architecture ( HKU )

An architect turned composer, Henry Lai started his career in music in the mid ‘80s with the famous ‘Island’ band. Since then, he has been a veteran in the Hong Kong movie industry for many years, writing songs, arranging and producing for various artists.

In the mid ‘90s, Henry Lai was very active in scoring for TV dramas and programs, on the recommendation of a friend, he scored his first movie ‘ The Kung Fu Scholar ‘ which changed his life completely. He was so totally mesmerized by the world of movie music that he has dedicated his next 20 years writing for movies.

Five times nominee and winner of the Best Original Movie Score award, Henry Lai’s diversity in musical style, ability to master in different genre and his enchanting melodies have captured the hearts of audiences from ‘ Echoes of the rainbow ‘ , ‘ Resurrection of the dragon’, ‘ White vengeance’ to ‘ Unbeatable.

 


 

Magnus Johnston

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistMagnus Johnston began his musical education as a chorister of the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, with which he toured all over the world. He won a scholarship to Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he studied with professor Wen Zhou Li, and then gained a scholarship to the RNCM where he studied with Dr Christopher Rowland.

Magnus is a founder member of the?Aronowitz Ensemble. Since joining the BBC’s New Generation Artists scheme in 2006, the Aronowitz Ensemble has featured extensively on BBC Radio 3. In addition to numerous studio recordings, broadcasts have included performances from the Wigmore and Bridgewater Halls, the Sage Gateshead, and the Aldeburgh, Bath, Cheltenham and City of London Festivals. The Ensemble made its BBC Proms debut in 2008, and returned for two further performances at the Proms in 2009. In 2009 the Ensemble won the prestigious Borletti Buitoni Special Ensemble Scholarship. Since 2009 he has been a member of the Navarra String Quartet.

He plays a Hieronymus II Amati violin, made possible by the support of his parents and many other investors.?

 


 

Jinsang LEE

Jinsang Lee has been making clear footprints in the classical music world by winning first prizes at numerous piano competitions including the 1st Prize, Scarlatti Prize and Orchestra Prize at the International Pianoforte Competition in Cologne in 2005 and the 1st Prize at the 2nd Hong Kong International Piano Competition, an event organized by the Chopin Society of Hong Kong in October 2008. Following this success, Jinsang won the 1st Prize at the 2009 Concours Géza Anda (Zurich) including the Mozart, Schumann and the public prizes.

He embarked upon this interesting journey by working at Steinway Austria for 2 years under the guidance of master piano technician Stefan Knüpfer (star of the docu-movie "Pianomania") and then moved to Hamburg Germany to learn the piano manufacturing process himself at the Steinway main factory. Jinsang has sought to take part in every step of creating the perfect piano sound, from selecting and processing the right wood to auditioning the final completed piano, and playing with the very piano that he chose for the audience. With these special insights and experience, he continues a rich concert career across different continents, most actively in Europe and Asia, to share his journey to find the perfect piano sound with the audience.

Jinsang started his musical education with Daejin Kim in Seoul, and continued his studies in Germany with support of Wolfgang Manz and Julia Goldstein, before completed his studies under the guidance of Pavel Gililov.

 


 

Alvaro PIERRI

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistAlvaro Pierri is internationally acclaimed as a leading personality in the world of the guitar. Press reviews around the world praise "his masterly thought-out interpretations"... "the breathtaking phrasing"...and "the unmatched musical colour spectrum that he creates on the guitar" . Alvaro Pierri was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, into a family of musicians. He received his early musical education from his mother, Ada Estades, on the piano and his aunt, Olga Pierri, on the guitar. Later he studied with Abel Carlevaro, the composer Guido Santorsola and also at the Uruguayan National Institute of Musicology.

From the age of 11 he was already winning prizes in international guitar competitions, including 1st Prize in the International Guitar Competition in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1st Prize in the International Guitar Competition in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and the Gold Medal at the 18th International Competition by France Musique/Radio France in Paris.

Pierri’s debut in the USA took place in New York and received outstanding reviews: … "Mr. Pierri revealed an artistic maturity not commonly encountered” … "compared to artists as Segovia, Bream, Williams” … "brilliant, sensitive, versatile, breathtaking” (New York Times & Continental Reviews). In 1983 he made his debut in Germany with the string soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and he subsequently appeared on numerous radio and television programmes in Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Denmark, Canada, Korea and Japan.

As a musician popular with both the public and the critics, Pierri is a regular guest at the major concert houses of Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Contemporary composers such as Leo Brouwer, Guido Santorsola, Jacques Hétu, Astor Piazzolla, Abel Carlevaro, Carlo Domeniconi and Terry Riley have written major works for Alvaro Pierri and in each case he has premiered them brilliantly.

His manifest love of chamber music has resulted in collaborations with major musical figures including Astor Piazzolla, Hatto Beyerle, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Ernö Sebestien, Regis Pasquier, Philippe Müller, Leo Brouwer, Alcides Lanza, Terry Riley, Tracy Silverman, Maureen Forrester, Eduardo Fernandez, the Cherubini Quartet and the Turtle Island String Quartet, and he has also worked with conductors such as Pinchas Steinberg, Charles Dutoit, Wojciech Rajski, Mario Bernardi and Yannick Nezet-Séguin.

Alvaro Pierri’s CDs have been released by Metropole-Polydor (France), Blue Angel-2001 (Germany), Milan Records (Canada), Analekta (Canada), Amplitude (Canada), Madacy (Canada), HOMA (Japan) and The Alpha Omega Sound (Hong Kong). His discography includes solo recordings, chamber music, guitar concerts and electro-acoustic music. Several of his CDs have been honoured with prices and nominations and he has already received twice the coveted Canadian FELIX award for the best classical CD of the year. Recently "Pioneer Classics Japan” brought out a DVD featuring Spanish and South American guitar music, and "Deutsche Grammophon” re-issued a DVD of Astor Piazzolla’s Double Concerto with Alvaro Pierri performing in duo with Astor Piazzolla.
Alvaro Pierri is also an internationally acclaimed teacher. Many of his students have won major international guitar competitions. He was professor at the University of Santa Maria in Brazil and subsequently ran a guitar class at McGill University and the UQAM (Academy of Music) in Montreal. In 2002 he was appointed professor at the famous Academy of Music in Vienna (today University of Music and Performing Arts).

Pierri gives master classes at major music festivals such as the New York Manhattan Masters, GFA Guitar Foundation of America, Québec FIG, the SIG Séminaire International de Guitare in Paris and Bordeaux, in Barcelona, at the Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg, the Wiener Meisterkurse, the Villa Musica in Mainz, and also in Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul and at The Joy of Music Festival in Hong Kong.

In recognition of his outstanding artistic talent and career and his permanent enriching contribution to the culture, in 2008, Alvaro Pierri was awarded the honorary citizenship of his hometown Montevideo.

The Alpha Omega Sound, the recording label of The Chopin Society of Hong Kong Ltd., has released Alvaro Pierri’s first of a series of recordings he is planning to record under this label. The CD has been entirely recorded by Mr. Pierri at Abbey Road Studios in London. With the present CD, Alvaro Pierri is embarking on a long term project with The Alpha Omega Sound, to record a comprehensive series of sonatas specifically composed for guitar and spanning the 19th to the 21st centuries. The collection, which will not necessarily be issued in chronological order of the compositions, will not contain transcriptions or shorter pieces but will focus exclusively on the superb body of music specifically composed and developed in a sonata form for the guitar.

Andrea PINO


Joy of Music 2015 ArtistAndrea Pino was born in Taranto in Southern Italy and studied double bass at the State Conservatoire Gioachino Rossini in Pesaro. He completed his postgraduate studies in solo performance at the Accademia Musicale in Florence and in orchestral training at the Arturo Toscanini Foundation in Parma. Andrea Pino has performed with numerous orchestras including the Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia, the Giuseppe Verdi Symphony Orchestra in Milan, the Teatro Regio Orchestra in Turin and the Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic Orchestra in Parma. Since 2006 he has served as principal bass of the Teatro La Fenice Orchestra in Venice, and has also performed for the Teatro alla Scala and the Teatro Lirico in Milan, Teatro Regio in Parma, Teatro Alighieri in Ravenna and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. Andrea Pino has performed on tour in Switzerland, Germany, France, India, Thailand, China and Malaysia, and has worked under the baton of distinguished conductors including Riccardo Muti, Ennio Morricone, Isaac Karabtchevsky, Patrick Fournillier and Myung-Whun Chung. He joined the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong as Principal Bass in 2014.

 


 

Ilya RASHKOVSKIY


Joy of Music 2015 ArtistAt the very young age of eight, Ilya Rashkovskiy made his solo debut with the Irkutsk Chamber Orchestra. From 1993 to 2000 he received his musical education in Novosibirsk with Professor M. Lebenzon. From 2000 to 2009 he studied at the Musikhochschule Hannover with Professor V. Krainev and at the École Normale Supérieure Alfred Cortot in Paris with Professor M. Rybicki.

Passionate about orchestra conducting and composition, he is following the teachings of Dominique Rouits and Michel Merlet.

Ilya Rashkovskiy was the 1st prize winner at the 8th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition (2012), the Citta di Pinerolo Competition (2012), the International Jaen Competition (2005), and at the Hong Kong International Piano Competition (2005). He is among the top prize winners of the Long-J. Thibaud Competition in Paris (2nd Place), Queen Elisabeth in Brussels (4th Place) and Artur Rubinstein Piano Masters in Tel Aviv (3rd Place).

In addition, he has performed in several prestigious concert venues throughout the world such as La Roque d’Anthéron in France, the Duszniki Zdroj Chopin Festival in Poland, and the Joy of Music Festival in Hong Kong. He has collaborated with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, the Kiev National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.

He recorded the Seasons and Sonata in c-sharp minor by Tchaikovsky (Naxos Label – 2008), Fantasies by Mozart, Chopin, Liszt and Scriabin (Alpha Omega Music Hong Kong – 2009), as well as Chopin’s Complete Études in 2013 (Victor Japan).

In 2014, he collaborated with violinist Park Ji-Yoon and recorded a CD featuring sonatas by Hahn, Faure, Shinuh Lee (DUX). A second album was recorded with pianist Giuseppe Andaloro and cellists Giovanni Sollima and Monika Leskovar, presenting Andaloro’s transcription of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring for two pianos and two cellos, as well as works by Ravel and Lutoslawsky (Alpha Omega Music Hong Kong).

 


 

Andrew WALTER

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistAndy is one of the world's foremost remastering engineers with four Gramophone awards, multiple ISRC awards, the coveted French 'Diapason Historique' award and two Grammy nominations to his name.

He joined Abbey Road Studios as an editor and mastering engineer in 1991. A diploma educated classical engineer by training, he studied at Spirit Studios in Manchester with various Factory Records bands in the late 80s and now works in both pop and classical surround mastering.

Andy is one of the foremost engineers to assist in the development of some of the world's leading digital restoration tools such as CEDAR, and has restored recordings from as early as 1898. He can work on recordings from any format: 78 record, vinyl, tape, CD, DVD, SACD and film audio track. He has also used his specialist restoration expertise to work on audio projects for the government, media and even forensically for the British police.

As a surround mastering engineer Andy is in great demand, working on a multitude of DVD and CD projects for some of the biggest artists in the world including David Bowie, Coldplay, Kylie, U2, The Cure, Robbie Williams, Radiohead and The Who.

He has worked on many notable specialist projects, with artists such as world-renowned opera singer Dame Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and legendary cellist Mtislav Rostropovich, both at Abbey Road and in St. Petersburg in Russia.

Over his 23 year career he has remastered thousands of back catalogue recordings for many of the major labels, including the Grammy-nominated Great Recordings of the Century Edition for EMI, the award-winning References Series and the restoration of various world music back catalogues. These include the back catalogue of Damon Albarn’s re-issue label, Honest Jon's, and many leading world music labels from Brazil and India to Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Andy is increasingly the mastering engineer of choice for the film and stage industries, mastering the CD soundtrack albums of Hollywood blockbusters such as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Eragon, Brave, Shadow Recruit and the Oscar-nominated film Atonement. He has mastered award-winning musicals such as the London cast album of Lord of the Rings, Dirty Dancing and Phantom Two: Love Never Dies for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

He is also actively involved in mastering surround media, working on the SKY HD output and mastering and compiling the critically acclaimed Sky Arts series ‘From the Basement’, with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich.

Andy has given various lectures and interviews on re-mastering and mastering techniques to both professional and academic institutions in the USA, Europe and the UK.

Outside of mastering work at Abbey Road, he runs a highly successful music and arts venue in Norfolk – Loddon Mill Arts – which hosts comedy evenings, jazz and classical concerts as well as educational courses. He is father to four children and is occasionally afforded the time to sail his yacht in competitions on the Norfolk Broads!

 


 

Matthew WU (flute)

Joy of Music 2015 ArtistMatthew Wu was born in Jiangxi, China. He graduated with honours from the Guangzhou Xinhai Conservatory of Music and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where he studied with Margaret Crawford. In 1997 he received the Rachel Percival Scholarship to study with Paul Edmund-Davies, Edward Beckett and Phillipa Davies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he completed his Post-Graduate Diploma and a Licentiate in flute performance. Matthew currently teaches flute at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Hong Kong Chinese University and the Hong Kong Institute of Education. He gives regular recitals and has made several recordings for RTHK Radio 4. As principal flautist of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong as well as founder and chairman of the Hong Kong Flute Association and Hong Kong Flute Academy, Matthew is devoted to promoting the flute.
